SB 171 – “School Calendar Flexibility/Cumberland County”

Yesterday, Senator deViere and Senator Ben Clark filed SB 171 – “School Calendar Flexibility/Cumberland County”. They’re confident that this piece of legislation will give local leaders the opportunity to adjust and modify school calendars to best accommodate the needs of Cumberland County.

GOVERNOR COOPER’S STATE OF THE STATE

Governor Roy Cooper addressed a joint session of the North Carolina General Assembly this week and talked about his vision for a North Carolina that works for all North Carolinians. He addressed members of the legislature and citizens across the state on how we need to invest in our public schools, expand Medicaid, and create an economy that works for everyone.


MEETING WITH HBCU STUDENTS

Senator deViere welcomed students of the HBCU Student Action Alliance to discuss their legislative priorities and concerns. Senator deViere reassured his commitment to HBCU students so that they can live, grow & prosper in North Carolina.


A COMMITMENT TO BUILD A BETTER FUTURE

Last week, Senator deViere and his Senate colleagues held a press conference and introduced “A Commitment to Build a Better Future” which is a bill that would provide for a statewide school bond to address our overcrowded and outdated schools. This offers equity in funding with each of North Carolina’s 115 school districts getting at least $10 Million for construction and repairs. A school bond like this is long overdue: the last statewide school bond passed over 20 years ago. Senator deViere believes that it is time we put our schools, teachers, and students first. This bond allows our state to move forward.


VISIT FROM FFA – GRAYS CREEK

Last week, members of the Gray’s Creek Chapter of the Future Farmers of America came to visit Senator deviere! These young individuals are committed to making a difference in our community.


CONVERSATION ABOUT MEDICAID EXPANSION

Senator Kirk deViere and Senator Michael Garrett had a great conversation with medical students from Duke on how we can keep North Carolinians healthy if we Expand Medicaid. Senator deViere and Senator Garrett both agree and were happy have a conversation with them.

LATINOS UNITED FOR PROGRESS

Senator deViere participated in an Entrepreneur Class graduation ceremony with Latinos United for Progress in Cumberland County. Latinos United for Progress advocate for the progress and well-being of the Latino community, via programs and projects that promote education, leadership, development, & cooperation.
