RALEIGH – Senator Kirk deViere was notified earlier today that the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is currently conducting an investigation that a non-PFAS compound was recently released into the Cape Fear River.

The non-PFAS compound is said to be released by Kuraray Americas and DEQ has updated our office that Kuraray Americas shut down operations on Tuesday, September 24th, to stop the release of this compound. According to DEQ, the spill was reported by a Department staff member after a bi-weekly sample was taken. “Our top priority should always be clean water, a secure environment, and healthy citizens” said Senator deViere.

According to DEQ, Chemours is the current permit holder of where the Kuraray Americas facility is located. “Chemours is aware that the Consent Order, which was issued by the DEQ earlier this year, states that they are not allowed to release any process water into the Cape Fear River” Senator deViere added.

Senator deViere has requested an update from DEQ on the directed actions in the consent order as well as the preliminary reports of this potential violation of the order. “We must continue to hold Chemours accountable for the requirements in the consent order and ensure there is not any more harm to our environment” said Senator deViere.

Senator deViere plans to monitor the spill through DEQ and see what further actions will be taken as a result of the spill. Additionally, he has called on DEQ to ensure the public is updated with the latest information on the actions from the consent order including groundwater testing and timely results of those tests.
